JointUse.org: Creating a communications hub for shared use advocates

In too many communities throughout California, children and their parents lack safe places to play and be physically active. To meet that need, many advocates are pushing to see more places implement a strategy called joint use, or shared use, which allows schools and communities to share resources like parks, gyms and playgrounds.

To bolster these efforts, California’s Joint Use Statewide Task Force (JUST) commissioned Berkeley Media Studies Group, in partnership with the Prevention Institute, to create an online space to share resources, discuss challenges and successes, and brainstorm next steps. The result was jointuse.org. Launched in 2009, the digital hub provided a hub for advocates to connect and raise the visibility of joint use. That same year, the site won an award for excellence in new communication from the Society for New Communications Research.
