People, parks, and power: Promoting green space equity

Green spaces are an important part of healthy neighborhoods, providing residents safe places to exercise, socialize, and enjoy the outdoors. However, because of racist and exclusionary practices, such as segregation and redlining, many communities lack them.

In partnership with the Prevention Institute, BMSG is working to promote green space equity through the People, Parks, and Power National Funding Initiative (P3). P3 aspires to uplift power-building within affected communities.

Through P3, BMSG and the Prevention Institute hope to advance three types of equity: procedural equity, distributional equity, and structural equity. This will ensure that communities are involved from the get-go in decision-making, the allocation of resources, and representation in organizations in power. This multifaceted approach will enable communities to continuously sustain, and improve, their rightful access to green spaces.
