research

We conduct analyses to learn how public health stories are told in the media, especially in news coverage and social media. This research helps inform advocates’ work because it gives them a starting point for understanding what is being said about their issue. Knowing what arguments for and against an issue are present or absent from media narratives offers a window into how the public and policymakers understand that issue and what can be done about it.

consultation and training

BMSG provides media advocacy consultations and trainings for advocates who want to craft communication strategies, develop or strengthen spokesperson skills, learn how to effectively frame their public health or social justice issue, and more.

journalist education

We help journalists incorporate a public health perspective into their reporting so that they can tell a more complete story and provide important but often overlooked context for their audiences. We also invite journalists to help inform our work so that the recommendations we make based on our news analyses are grounded in the real-world circumstances of today’s news industry.
