Food marketing to kids: Excesses in capitalism

In a plenary session of “lightening rounds” for the annual meeting of Healthy Eating Research, BMSG Director Lori Dorfman described how food marketing shapes the current nutrition landscape for kids in the U.S. She also discussed how and why marketers target children of color more aggressively with ads for unhealthy foods and touched on the ways in which tech platforms like Google’s YouTube have knowingly and illegally monitored, tracked, and served targeted ads to young children.
