Health voices for housing: Media spokesperson trainings for BARHII partners
Date: January 12, 2021 - January 14, 2021
Public health and medical care staff can be powerful voices in decisions that impact housing conditions for California’s families and communities. Our voices have never been as important as they are right now, as housing instability, crowding, and homelessness increase transmission rates of COVID-19 and entrench health inequities.
To be effective messengers, advocates need to be prepared to talk confidently with reporters, frame the issue to connect to their policy goal, and stay on message even when answering hard questions. In this two-part training, BMSG provided tools and guidance to help health professionals use their voice and communicate effectively in support of housing policies. BMSG placed media interviews within the context of an overall media advocacy strategy and led the group through a series of hands-on exercises to practice interviewing skills and receive feedback.
