Hope and Heal Fund: How to talk about community-led work to stop firearm death and injury
Date: September 26, 2024
BMSG’s Associate Program Director and Director of Research, Pamela Mejia and Head of Strategic Consultation, Ingrid Daffner Krasnow delivered two trainings for grantees of the Hope and Heal Fund. BMSG presented some of the findings from the research they conducted on how the media framed stories on different forms of firearm violence as well as the public’s perception on these issues.
They were also joined by Kelvin Ward, who leads the Violence Intervention/Prevention Advocacy work as a Community Organizer for Inland Congregations United For Change (ICUC). Kelvin shared some of the lessons from his work in San Bernardino county on how they changed their approach to media strategy and how it led to effective results.
Participants also got hands-on experience to work through message strategy, message development, learned how to address difficult questions that come up in their work, and got the opportunity to practice their media interviewing skills.
