People, Parks, and Power: Building narrative power for park and green space equity

Date: May 01, 2025 at 11:30 - May 01, 2025 at 1:00

Thursday, May 1 | 11:30am – 1pm PT

“Take a deep breath, and imagine: outdoor space that belongs to everyone, where all people — no matter their race or income — can breathe freely and safely. Communities across the country are working toward that vision, building their power to literally transform the landscape and ensure that the distribution of parks and green space is equitable, that structures are in place so they remain so, and that community members are the ones leading this work.”

Changing the story about park and green space equity: A messaging guide for advocates,” Berkeley Media Studies Group

Please join us for an upcoming dialogue centered on building narrative power for park and green space equity.

People, Parks, and Power (P3) is the first national funding initiative in the U.S. to support power building by community-based organizations to reverse deep-seated park and green space inequities in Black, Latine, and Indigenous communities across the country. Currently in its second grant cycle, P3 continues to provide fiscal and strategic support to six community-based organizations in their long-term work to advance park equity through local policy and systems change.

As part of the People, Parks, and Power (P3) initiative, Prevention Institute and Berkeley Media Studies Group (BMSG) developed a messaging guide that describes how narratives can help bring park and green space equity to scale in local communities, and includes frames, language, and communication tools to advocate for parks and green space as a source of community health, joy, and liberation.

We will be joined by South Bronx Unite and The Conscious Connect CDC to learn more about how they have worked to build narrative power for park and green space equity, crafted effective messaging, and built community with other advocates nationwide. South Bronx Unite brings together neighborhood residents, community organizations, academic institutions, and allies to improve and protect the social, environmental, and economic future of Mott Haven and Port Morris. The Conscious Connect CDC reimagines and redevelops underutilized spaces for the purposes of education, culture, peace, and health — so that success is not defined by zip codes.
