Youth Alive: Teens on Target
Date: August 03, 2023
Berkeley Media studies group trainers Shaddai Martinez Cuestas and Rosaura Wardsworth traveled to Youth Alive’s Oakland office to deliver a spokesperson training in person to their Teens on Target program participants. This four-hour training centered on building capacity among Youth Alive’s Teens on Target youth leaders to communicate effectively about their violence prevention work with the news media. Martinez Cuestas and Wardsworth covered topics from navigating difficult questions to developing values focused messages that would inspire the group’s targets. Many of the teens within the training had practice giving media interviews and speaking at the capitol about violence within the Oakland area. This real life experience created the perfect opportunity for teens to learn about interviewing and public speaking from each other. Which fostered a train the trainer environment that led to healthy debates and conversation.
