Reporting on violence

The goal of the Reporting on Violence project was to improve journalists’ coverage of crime and to provide consumers of news with more accurate and comprehensive information on violence and violence prevention. To do this, we published two reporting handbooks and conducted numerous workshops for news organizations.

Strategic communication for Cal Wellness transition cohort

The California Wellness Foundation is a grantmaker that aims to address the health needs of underserved populations and to support the nonprofit organizations that work with these populations. To that end, Cal Wellness commissioned Berkeley Media Studies Group to provide strategic communication assistance to such nonprofits, specifically its grantees transitioning out of the foundation’s Advancing Wellness program.

Strategic communication to advance racial equity

The Consumer Health Foundation icollaborated with the Praxis Project and the Berkeley Media Studies Group to expand and strengthen its current communication around racial equity as a fundamental factor in health equity.

Strategic consultation for Bay Area Regional Health Inequities Initiative (BARHII)

BMSG worked with BARHII to build the staff and members’ capacity for media advocacy, including assessing news coverage of BARHII and key BARHII issues, conducting media advocacy trainings, advising the Data and Built Environment Working Groups, commissioning linguistic analyses of key BARHII terminology, providing strategic consultation and more.

Strategic consultation for Community Clinics Initiative

As part of this project, Berkeley Media Studies Group helped select grantees of the Community Clinics Initiative identify a media advocacy strategy, strengthen their current media materials and brainstorm training goals.
